How do I read your plant listings?

For each plant, we have provided a photo, description and the dimensions you can expect the plant to grow. These dimensions are a guide and will depend on the amount of light, water and the fertility of your soil.

Frost Hardiness

The hardiness rating lets you know how tolerant the plant is of frost. The rating is based on our garden in Canowindra where we get frosts to minus 6 degrees. Fully hardy plants will not be affected by frost; half hardy plants will be burnt, but will recover; tender plants will be burnt and may never recover. If you only get a light frost once or twice over winter, you should be able to grow even tender plants.

Water Use

Most of our plants are drought tolerant or low water use plants, but we have included some plants that require a bit more water to grow well. We have rated each plant with a number from 1 to 3. The rating is based on our climate in Canowindra over summer. As it has been a drought for the past 9 or so years out here, summers have been typified by very low rainfall, low humidity and high temperatures. A plant with a score of 1 will need no or very little watering over summer. A plant with a score of 2 will need a bit of water to keep it flourishing in summer. A plant with a score of 3 will need regular water throughout the year to keep it alive.

To help you plan where in the garden to put the plants, they are listed as either perennial or herbaceous and their preferred aspect; that is full sun, part shade or shade. As plants are quite adaptable, even those that are listed as sun, may tolerate part shade, but they may not flower as well.

The primary flower colour is listed as some plants have 2 or more colours on the flowers, but the main one is that which is listed.

How and where do you grow your plants?

The plants are grown by us in our nursery in Canowindra. Canowindra (pronounced Ca - noun - dra) is in the Central West of NSW, near Orange. In summer, the temperatures are usually well over 30, sometimes over 40, and in winter, we get frosts from April to September. We have just about all of the plants listed here growing in our garden.

We grow in 100mm (4”) maxi pots. Growing in 100mm pots means that you are getting a larger, better grown plant for your money.
